UATH commisions medical equipment donated by Japanese Embassy

The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) in Gwagwalada, FCT, has commissioned some vital medical equipments donated by the Embassy of Japan to help improve the health status of Nigerians.

Prof. Bissallah Ekele, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), at the commissioning, commended the embassy for the kind gesture, saying it would help promote health coverage of the hospital and the country at large.

According to him, the medical equipment would go a long way in achieving the World Health Organisation’s set standards of Universal Health Coverage for the development of health sector.

“The UATH is a 520-bed capacity, the biggest in FCT and by the virtue of our location, we do not only serve FCT but receive patients from neighbouring States of Nasarawa, Kogi and Niger State.

“Being the first hospital in FCT to manage Covid-19 patients, we have managed about 1000 severe cases that needed oxygen with very good outcome of 90 per cent patients recovery.

“This is not the first time the hospital is benefitting from the government of Japan, my first assignment in July 2017 was to receive a brand new well-equipped ambulance,” he said.

However, he also called for the provision of a modern CT scan machine, adding that the old 16-slide machine could no longer cope with the demand from the patients.

The Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, Mr Matsunaka Kazuyoshi, said the embassy had always supported Nigeria through its Grant Assistance for grassroots human security project scheme.

He said the commissioning is meant to celebrate the completion of the Project for Procurement of Medical Equipment for the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.

Kazuyoshi revealed that the Grant Contract was signed March 21, 2019 to provide patients with appropriate services and health improvement in the hospital.

However, he enjoined the hospital’s management to utilise the equipment properly for the benefit of many patients.
