The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, has commenced extensive renovation and upgrade works at its Infectious Disease Centre as part of efforts to strengthen preparedness for public health emergencies and emerging infectious disease outbreaks.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UATH, Prof. Thairu Yunusa, disclosed this during an inspection visit to assess the progress of work at the facility on Wednesday.
According to the CMD, the renovation aligns with the Federal Government’s directive aimed at enhancing pandemic preparedness and improving the nation’s capacity to respond effectively to infectious disease outbreaks and other public health threats.
Prof. Yunusa stated that upon completion, the Centre would be fully equipped with modern facilities and resources required to manage infectious diseases and health emergencies.
He added that the hospital has already mobilised skilled healthcare professionals and other critical resources to ensure effective response to diseases such as Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, and other emerging infections.
He emphasised that the upgraded facility would significantly improve UATH’s readiness to contain outbreaks, protect public health, and provide specialised care for affected patients.
The CMD further urged the contractor handling the project to adhere strictly to approved specifications, maintain high-quality standards, and ensure timely completion of the renovation work.
Prof. Yunusa reiterated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to strengthening the healthcare sector through the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that investments in critical health infrastructure remain central to improving healthcare delivery across the country.
He recalled that UATH was designated as an Infectious Disease Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the hospital successfully managed numerous cases and played a key role in the nation’s response to the global health crisis.
The ongoing renovation is expected to further position the hospital as a leading centre for infectious disease management, research, training, and emergency response in Nigeria.
