The University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH) has awarded a contract for the supply and installation of a state-of-the-art 1.5 Tesla Helium-Free Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine as part of its commitment to enhancing diagnostic and healthcare services.
Speaking during the presentation of the contract award letter, the Chief Medical Director, Professor Thairu Yunusa, described the acquisition as a major milestone in the hospital’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its diagnostic capacity and improve patient care.
He noted that the long-awaited helium-free MRI machine, upon installation, will enable the hospital to diagnose complex medical conditions with greater precision, efficiency, and safety, while eliminating many of the operational challenges associated with conventional MRI systems that rely on liquid helium.
Professor Yunusa further stated that, as a strategic gateway teaching hospital in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the acquisition of the advanced MRI technology will position UATH among leading diagnostic and interventional healthcare centres in Nigeria and beyond.
The Chief Medical Director emphasized that the project aligns with the hospital’s vision of providing world-class healthcare services, advancing medical training, and supporting cutting-edge clinical research.
He added that the contract was awarded following a transparent and competitive bidding process conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Public Procurement Act, 2007, and other applicable due process requirements.
The MRI machine is expected to significantly improve access to advanced diagnostic imaging services for patients within the FCT and neighbouring states, while reducing the need for referrals to other facilities.
