ECOWAS Heads of State and Government has agreed to take military and financial actions against the unconstitutional takeover of government in the Republic of Niger which occurred on July 26, 2023. Dr Omar Touray, President of ECOWAS Commission, disclosed this at the end of an Extraordinary Meeting of ECOWAS on Niger, in Abuja. He said that the authority has agreed that military action would be taken against the military junta of Niger Republic if they failed to restore President Bazoum within one week. Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS has called for the immediate release and reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum as the legitimate Head of State and Government of the Republic of Niger. This is contained in a communique at the end of the Extraordinary Summit on Socio-Political Situation in the Republic of Niger, read by the President, ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray. The crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) has continued unabated as a new LP faction led by Olumide Adesoyin emerged in Lagos state. The Adesoyin-led faction disowned Dayo Ekong-led executive committee (Exco), which led the party into the 2023 general elections in the state. Speaking, Mr Adesoyin said that a court of competence had warned the general public to desist from dealing with Ekong-led faction anymore in the state. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) says the ongoing nationwide strike action embarked upon by its members on Wednesday may continue indefinitely. It added that the strike would continue until the government made reasonable progress to address its demands as contained in the ultimatum issued to the federal government on July 5. The association made its stand known in a communique it issued on Saturday at the end of its national executive council (NEC) meeting held in Lagos. The police command in Anambra has confirmed the release of a popular Police, Chukwudozie Nwangwu, popularly known as “Akwa Okuko Tiwaraki”, by his abductors. The police public relations officer in the state, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed Mr Nwangwu’s release on Saturday. Mr Ikenga noted that the native doctor, kidnapped at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, in Oba in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra, was released by his abductors in the early hours of Saturday. According to Mr Ikenga, the abductors had contacted friends and relatives, demanding N300 million. “I also have information that they have not paid and that he has been released by his abductors. We are making efforts to get information about what happened”, he said.

U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris and United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres have backed Nigeria’s efforts toward restoring constitutional order in the Niger Republic. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9, AIG Echeng Echeng, has charged personnel in Imo to neutralise IPOB/ESN elements enforcing the sit-at-home directive.
