The university said that 2,260 regular staff and pensioners had received their February 2023 salary. “Management considers it strange that with all the efforts it has made over the months in the payment of salaries, a group of politicians’ poster boys would still come out and describe the payment as “rumour”, “selective”, etc. “The latest payment of February, 2023 salaries is a case in point. “It is certainly beyond rumour that over 2,260 regular staff and pensioners have received their February 2023 salaries as at Thursday, including some of...

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was on Friday, charged with abuse of power and money laundering over projects launched under his premiership. INEC Vows To Appeal Against Verdict Ordering It To Allow Two Nigerians Vote Without PVCs

Following a court order that directed it to allow two Nigerians to vote with their temporary voter cards (TVC), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has vowed to appeal the court order. Kofoworola Olusegun and Wilson Allwell, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/180/2023 and filed on February 8, had challenged INEC on the position that only a permanent voter card (PVC) can be used in an election. Delivering judgment on Thursday, Obiora Egwuatu, presiding judge of the federal high court in Abuja, said the applicants should be allowed to use their TVCs in the absence of the PVCs. Egwuatu determined that neither the 1999 constitution nor the electoral act contained any language stipulating that only PVCs could be used for voting and that instead, section 47 of the statute a...

Players’ union supports temporary concussion substitutes trial

The current concussion protocol in football is not working, according to global players’ union FIFPRO, which supports calls for a trial on temporary concussion substitutes. The Premier League in England has also urged the law-making International Football Association Board (IFAB) to trial temporary substitutions to allow players with head injuries to be assessed. IFAB will instead continue with permanent substitutions which FIFA president Gianni Infantino has declared the “risk-free” approach. The permanent concussion substitutes rule means that a team can replace a player with a suspected head injury without it counting toward their allocation of substitutes. “I fail to comprehend the logic to be very honest,” FIFPRO General Secretary Jonas Baer-Hoffman said on a video confer...

Youths, Politics in Social Media Age

By Marindoti Oludare The year was 1954 when 25-year old Martin Luther King Jr became a pastor in the Dexter Baptist Church. By 1955, a now 26-year old King organised the Montgomery bus boycott in protest of the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation in Southern United States. As a 32-year-old, he had started the non-violent Albany movement against all forms of racial segregation in Albany Georgia. As a 34-year-old, he had also started the Birmingham campaign against racial segregation and economic injustice where he was jailed, during which he wrote the famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail”. It was at this same age that King organised the epic March on Washington where the now renowned “I Have a Dream” speech was made. At 35, his agitations had led to the Civil Rights A...

INEC Gives Reason For Shifting Governorship, State Assembly Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given reasons why it decided to postpone the March 11 gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections. Citing logistics challenges, INEC announced March 18 for the elections to hold. According to the electoral body, this will allow more time for voting machines used in last month’s presidential and legislative elections to be reconfigured and deployed for the upcoming vote, said Festus Okoye, a spokesman for Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, in a statement. Ahead of the gubernatorial election, a court on Wednesday approved the electoral body’s request to reset the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, or BVAS machines — part of new technologies heavily used this year's elections to make them more transp...
